Block Printing
Fusing Craft & Design
When I want a design to have a hand-made feel, I often find that actually making it by hand can be the best solution! Photoshop layers will never provide the depth that a hand carved block allows. By carving each shape and letter by hand, I get to add my own touch to every line and curve.
Another unique aspect of relief printing is its willingness to teach you the value of failure. Whether you accidentally carve off a crucial line or forget to mirror your type, problem solving is a critical skill when control z isn’t an option. Printmaking has taught me to trust in myself in a way that working in Illustrator or InDesign never could. The required laser focus and repetition of printmaking allows the final step of printing to be immensely more satisfying than simply clicking print on your computer.
