The Same Coin Tarot

Conceptualization, Illustration, Writing

The traditional tarot characters exist in a strictly white, cisgendered, heteronormative world. This can feel alienating and distracting to members of the queer community when interpreting the card’s meanings. It is important for users to feel represented and celebrated by their spiritual resources in order to connect most fully with their messages.

The Same Coin Tarot offers its audience a spiritual resource that centers the esoteric meaning of the cards while representing the diversity of the human experience. By drawing a comparison between the deck’s overarching theme of duality and the spectrum of gender, I weave a conversation around queer identities into each card without distracting from their spiritual purpose. Despite being the driving force of this project, I wanted the topic of queer representation to fade into the background, as if present only by fortuity, allowing the depth of queer identities to stretch beyond being queer. One day I hope I’m able to make art centering queerness without feeling the need to mention queerness. Until then, I aim to make it impossible to be ignored.
